drastic plastic sleeve
NME Drastic Plastic 4 song 33rpm EP
1985
Forest Fire (Cole) live in London
Given away free with the NME in 1985 and including songs by The Style Council, Prefab Sprout and Robert Cray, this was so popular that we received a silver disc for it... which we never got for any of our own singles.
tree bird sleeve
The Tree And The Bird And The Fish And The Bell
1991 (CBS)
Are You Ready to be Heartbroken? (Clark/Cole) live
With proceeds going to the Oscar Marzoli trust this album features the usual Glasgow suspects - John Martyn, Big Dish, Texas etc. This version of Heartbroken was recorded on the 1990 'X Album' tour, I think...
i'm your fan sleeve
I'm Your Fan: The Songs of Leonard Cohen
1991 (Warner Bros)
Chelsea Hotel (Cohen)
Curated by the French magazine Les Inrockupibles this is a generally fine compilation and it features John Cale's 'Hallelujah' which is the greatest of all Cohen covers. Our version was recorded when we were making 'Don't Get Weird'. Quine's solo is better than any that ended up on my album, I think...
rare on air sleeve
Rare On Air : Volume 2
1995 (Mammoth)
Famous Blue Raincoat (Cohen)
An album of live sessions from KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. Neil Clark and I with acoustic guitars, actually recorded early in the morning, as I recall.
bacharach sleeve
Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach
1997 (Tzadik)
I just don't know what to do with myself (Bacharach/David)
John Zorn project for his Tzadik label. I guess he approached Quine first, as he didn't know me then. This is just me with Quine at Harold Dessau. Recorded around the time I was getting ready to make the Love Story follow up, I think.
bolan sleeve
Great Jewish Music: Marc Bolan
1998 (Tzadik)
Romany Soup (Bolan)
Dave Derby and I with synths and drum machines making quite a racket. Appropriate for the song, I thought. At the time, at least.
pop romantique sleeve
Pop Romantique : French Pop Classics
1999 (Emperor Norton)
Si Tu Dois Partir (Dylan)
This is the Negatives with me singing in French (with much pronunciation help from Dominque Durand and Yves Beauvais). I still sound like a Rosbif, I know.
bacharach sleeve
Reproductions: Songs of the Human League
2000 (March)
The 6ths with Lloyd Cole - Human (Harris/Lewis)
This was recorded at Stephin Merritt's flat in the East Village. He had a dog up his jumper the whole time.
daft wild sleeve
Daft Wild Sparkling Strawberry Soda
2003 (Apricot)
39 Down (Cole)
Impossible Girl (Cole)
German label's compilation of their idea of good. They asked, I said why not? Where else will you find me rubbing shoulders with Tahiti 80 and Orwell? These are not special recordings, by the way, just the same as on my albums.
Reinterpretations sleeve
Lunz : Interpretations
2005 (Gronland)
Akimbo (Astrid Kane Remix Featuring Lloyd Cole)
Lunz is Tim Story and Hans Joachim Roedelius (from Cluster). Their 2003 album Lunz was absolutely wonderful so I was thrilled when they asked me to contribute to Reinterpretations. Most tracks were remixes, but I don't really do that, so I wrote a lyric idea for 'Akimbo' based on the letters in the word and came up with Astrid Kane's adventures. Tim did the mix based on a rough mp3 I sent him. I think he did a great job.
the pilgrim sleeve
The Pilgrim : A celebration of Kris Kristofferson
2006 (American Roots Publishing)
Lloyd Cole & Jill Sobule - For The Good Times (Kristofferson)
I play keys and program, Jill plays guitar. She figured out the harmonies. Kris wrote us a note to thank us. How great is that?
