Nicky Holland sleeve
Nicky Holland
Lady Killer (Cole/Holland)
Nicky was one of the few peple I knew when I moved to NYC, she had arranged strings on Mainstream so I asked her to work in a slightly more collaborative role on my debut solo record. A year or so later she invited me to try to write with her. We came up with what was the first single on her album 'Nicky Holland' (Sony 1991). I mime the bass in the video, as I recall, I don't play on the record.

Nicky Holland
Nobody's Girl (Cole/Holland)
A year or so after Lady Killer Nicky asked me to write a song with her for submission to a movie that was being made (Girls on the Side). This process took forever with the film folk asking for endless changes and then eventually, after we had been told we pretty much had it, we didn't have it... Still, the song turned out pretty well and was the first single from Nicky's second record 'Sense and Sensuality' (Sony 1997).
girlfriend sleeve
Matthew Sweet
Girlfriend (Volcano 1991)
Matthew had played bass on my 'X album' and toured in my band for a little while. He left the tour to make what became 'Girlfriend'. He asked me to come in and play some guitar. I really don't do anything he couldn't, but he wanted me to... so I play on Looking at The Sun, Day For Night and a couple of the acoustic tracks at the end. I also titled 'Girlfriend' and 'Winona' for him as he was unable to admit what he was singing about until cornered.
adventures sleeve
The Adventures
Desert Rose
When I first arrived in NYC I got a request from a band I really didn't know to help them finish a song they were working on. The Adventures were a rock band from Belfast. I really don't remember what I did - wrote some lyrics, for sure. It ended up on their third album 'Trading Secrets with The Moon' (Elektra 1989).

Ivy
I've Got A Feeling
Ivy were my neighbours in NYC and then we ended up touring together when they opened the Love Story show in N. America. Shortly thereafter they asked me to come in the studio with them when they were doing pre-production fro their next project. I thought nothing had come of it, but I guess they credit me with helping on 'I've Got A Feeling' which was included on 'Apartment Life' (1997, reissued Unfiltered 2003)

Jacklighter
Parker and Sprague were good friends in NYC. I co-produced the following songs with Gavin MacKillop - Red Flannel, Gravity, Baby Are You Rich?, Fireflies and 45's, Getaway Car. I also play harmonica and sing back ups.
Released by Barclay (France) 1990.
yola sleeve
Eleanor McEvoy
Dreaming of Leaving (Cole/McEvoy)
Eleanor and I met at a songwriter get together in Connenara in the late 1990's. I admit I only went because of the golf, but it turned out to be a great experience and Eleanor is a wonderful artist. We wrote this song together and to be truthful, I think for my part I may have been re-writing The Ballad of Lucy Jordan, but it turned out pretty well. Eleanor recorded it for her 'Yola' album (Blue Dandelion 2001).
naked self sleeve
The The
Global Eyes
Matt Johnson and I were neighbours in a rehearsal/recording studio in Tribeca in the mid 1990's. We became quite friendly. Matt sung on my version of Karen Black's 'Memphis' and by way of revenge he had me sing on 'Global Eyes' which was included on 'Naked Self' (Nothing 1999).
Reiss sleeve
Reiss
Joying on the Vibe of Life
At that Tribeca studio complex - Harold Dessau - my immediate neighbour was my poker playing friend Craig Kafton. He produced and album for an artist named Reiss in the late 1990's and I played a little guitar on it.
beautiful game sleeve
Brilliantine
My Life and the Beautiful Game
I was keyboard player in Dave Derby's band Brilliantine the last few years I was in NYC. Maybe because he let me wear a yellow sleeveless fleece jacket on stage. I remain a huge Brillaintine fan and think the debut 'Vainglory' frankly surpasses most of what it intends to reference. This is the follow up. I helped a little with production only. (Deep Reverb 1999)

Dave Derby
Even Further Behind
This was Dave's first post Brilliantine record. I helped a little with production again. (Badman 2003)
norfolk downs sleeve
Dave Derby and the Norfolk Downs
Oh True (Derby/Cole/Sobule)
Dave, Jill Sobule and I wrote about a half a song about Truman Capote sometime around 1998. Dave finished it and called it 'Oh, True' . It's included on 'DD and the Norfolk Downs' (Reveal 2007). I also sing back ups on Sunset Sublet and keyboards on the Brillaintine throwback Albuquerque.
fromthehip sleeve
Grammercy Arms
Fakin' (Derby/Cole)
Grammercy Arms (Reveal 2008) is really just the new Norfolk Downs album, it's the Dave Derby band. I co wrote and played synth on 'Fakin'' which is a reworking of an old Brilliantine song 'Taken'.
te dejas sleeve
Mikel Erentxun
En Silencio
Mikel was singer in a Spanish band called Duncan Dhu who opened for me in Paris in maybe 1990 or so. He is now a solo artist. He came to NYC to have Frad Maher produce his 2000 album Te Dejas Ver (Gasa). He asked me to talk a translation/adaptation of the lyric in En Silencio.
El Corredor sleeve
Mikel Erentxun
El Corredor de la Suerte
This is Mikel's 'Let's get all my friends and heros on one record' project. Recorded near Biarritz in France, I was able to visit after some Portuguese shows. I play harmonica on 'Solo tu', acoustic guitar and singing on 'Visitantes', vocals on 'Sweet Home Louisiana' and acoustic guitar on 'Disparame un tequiro'
bluebox sleeve
Kate Ceberano
Blue Box
In the mid 1990's Fred Maher and Alan Friedman were producing an album for Australian singer Kate Ceberano, I wrote lyrics for 'Looking at You' which was included and 'Lazy Susan '77' which was a b-side to one of the singles. Ultimately the album; 'Blue Box' was released only in Australia.
