2008-9 Live Show Playlists

I've had a few questions regarding the music played over the PA before my shows, during the intermission and after the show, and yes, I do control that usually (sometimes I forget). Last year I tried using my old (2nd generation) iPod and it worked pretty well. This year I guess I'll buy a nice small one and save on my excess baggage charges.

So here are the 2008 - early 2009 playlists

Pre -

1. Kin / Valgeir Sigurdssson 5:05
2. Now It's On / Grandaddy 4:08
3. Over The Hillside / The Blue Nile 5:05
4. Long Black Veil / The Band 3:06
5. Sweet Sixteen / Billy Idol 4:17
6. Ring Them Bells / Bob Dylan 3:00
7. Smash And Grab / Juliette & The Licks 2:48
8. Another Place, Another Time / Bobbie Gentry 1:53
9. Pop Life / Prince And The Revolution 3:43
10. Ballad Of Easy Rider / The Byrds
11. This Is Not A Test / She & Him 3:31
12. Evolution of Waters / Valgeir Sigurdssson 4:34
13. She Bruise Easy / Cousteau 4:35
14. Marching Bands of Manhattan / Death Cab for…4:13
15. Big Brother / David Bowie 3:20
16. Humor Me / Pere Ubu 2:44
17. Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family / David Bowie…2:08
18. The North Pole / The Walkmen 3:49
19. Ooh La La / The Faces 3:31
20. Destiny Rules / Fleetwood Mac
21. Me Against the World / Hercules

Mid -

1. Something On Your Mind / Karen Dalton 3:23
2. How My Heart Behaves / Feist 4:22
3. Watch The Tapes / LCD Soundsystem 3:48
4. From Here To Eternity / The Only Ones 3:07
5. Make a Plan to Love Me / Bright Eyes 4:14
6. Boy With A Coin / Iron and Wine 3:46
7. Hello, Hooray / Alice Cooper 4:19
8. Rugla / Amiina 3:48
9. Limit to your Love / Feist 4:44
10. What's In It For Me / The Walkmen

Post -

1. Ma Blonde Est Partié / Amédée Breaux 2:50
2. Vou Dar De Beber À Dor / Amália Rodrigues 2:31
3. Goodbye My Love / The Searchers 2:59
4. Eternal Flame / Joan As Policewoman 3:40
5. Goodbye To Love / The Carpenters 3:57

I'll be making some new ones for Germany, etc in April - maybe Krautrock for 2009? Some songs will stay, though. Ma Blonde Est Partie is too beautiful and Karen Dalton is amazing!

lloyd, i think its awesome that you are a huge chic/ rogers/ edwards fan. despite selling millions + millions of LPs & 45s that hit machine NEVER gets enough respect.

anyway since Im sure u have all the R&E sister sledge LPs, I highly recommend the NORMA JEAN LP with 'saturday' - the whole LP . oddly enough there is a 21st century hipster band Norma Jean ?

and you prob have the 'Soup For One' soundtrack LP.
I also recommend Rogers "B Movie matinee" LP.
and the DIANA Ross LP was reissued with two DIFFERENT mixes, incl the "unreleased" CHIC mix that motown rejected!

Title: Chic

Yes, I was playing only Chic after the shows up to a point last year.
Here's the CD playlist I give the non-initiated

1. Le Freak / Chic 5:32
2. I Want Your Love / Chic 6:56
3. Good Times / Chic 8:16
4. My Feet Keep Dancing / Chic 6:41
5. Upside Down / Diana Ross 4:06
6. I'm Coming Out / Diana Ross 5:26
7. He's The Greatest Dancer / Sister Sledge 6:16
8. We Are Family / Sister Sledge 8:23
9. Thinking Of You / Sister Sledge 4:31
10. Lost In Music / Sister Sledge 3:26
11. Everybody Dance / Chic 6:43
12. At Last I Am Free / Chic 7:14

BTW - printing out your playlists - is there an easy way? I can't see one. My work around is to choose Print (text only) then Preview and the text can be copied from that page.

I have that Diana re-issue. The original mixes were by Bob Clearmountain (Bruce, Bad Vibes) and I was so excited when I read this, I was expecting to prefer them, but Motown were right, the mixes which were used were tighter and less reverby (less Chic-y) and more Diana. Well done record company, for a change.

Title: diana + madonna

gosh you get me going on chic/rodgers/ edwards its a category i can never stop.

as far as DIANA, I do prefer the longer mix of "Tenderness" [one of the best non-hits on the LP]. are the original 1980 mixes a bit better ... possibly. I just tried to hear the 'Chic' mixes with an open mind & I thought it was valid .... granted the radio "Im Coming Out" IS more dynamic than the Chic mix.

Id also recommend: Niles' production on madonna's "Virgin" LP. the 12" mixes of 'angel' and 'like a virgin' are stunning.

and of course Shiela b devotion's "Spacer" is one of the best chic songs/productions

I hope you return to philadelphia soon & maybe play JOHNNY BRENDA's, WORLD CAFE, North Star Bar ..... First Unitarian Church .... Thanks !!

Title: The iPod experiment seems to have worked

Last year, rather than making CDs of these playlists, I began travelling with my old (gigantic and heavy with huge power adapter) iPod and giving it to the sound guy with instructions to play pre, mid, and post playlists at the appropriate times. Next week I'm taking it a little further with my new, touring only tiny little iPod Nano (my personal music is in the computer / on my iPhone). I've edited and augmented the playlists, adding a lot more songs - this time the playlists will play in shuffle mode so it will be different each night, with 3 hours or so to choose from for the first set.

Here are the playlists as they stand right now. I expect I'll edit them in my spare time on the road. Thanks again to Dave Bates for introducing me to Last Shadow Puppets, Natty, Fleet Foxes, etc -

If anyone needs to copy and paste their playlists like this - it is not simple in iTunes - you need to set the view options in the playlist to show only 'artist' and some other field that you're not using - I use 'comments'. Order the columns so comments is between song and artist, select all and then enter '/' in the comments field, or whatever separator you prefer. Then choose print - choose 'Song Listing' and 'Custom' as the theme (custom will only display what you are viewing in the playlist). Then, instead of printing, choose Preview and then select all and copy the text - it prints out like the above. Seems long winded? It's faster than typing all this. And once you have the workaround, you have it.
