Lloyd Cole calls upon fans for recording fund

The former leader of '80s British pop band the Commotions used his Web site and e-mail list to encourage pre-purchase of the follow-up to 2006's "Antidepressant," an approach that he says has raised a significant amount of the funding he needs to record it. "I'm looking to raise $60,000, which these days is a lot of money, but it's looking like I'm going to get at least 80 percent of it," Cole says. "Even though I haven't got everything we were looking for, it's enough to start making the record."

Cole, who resides with his wife and two sons in Northampton, Mass., has opted to return to New York to record in "a proper studio" with outside producers. "My last two records have very much been solo records -- me in a room for 90 percent of them," he says. "I want to make an old-school record working with musicians I like in a room, with songs I've just written, probably recording to tape."

He'll be joined in the studio by multi-instrumentalist Mark Schwaber, who's part of Cole's current Small Ensemble acoustic touring outfit, and drummer Fred Marr, who produced some of Cole's early solo recordings. It's likely that Commotions guitarist Neil Clark will also play some role on the album.

"It is going to be very diverse in sound," Cole says. "There's going to be some loud songs but also some quiet songs -- at least two or three done in the Small Ensemble style.

Anticipating Blair Cowans participation, which was announced earlier... I dearly hope so! Cole/Clark in a symbiosis with Cowan... Sounds like "Sweetness" I reckon!

I've never played golf. Detest the whole spoiling the countryside thing. But I'm Wii supreme golf champion in my household. Why can't all golf be played like that & then leave the countryside alone? So - as a decent golfer, are you any good at Wii golf?

I don't know yet! And I won't join that debate, it is too complicated. Chemical run off from farms make golf courses look like nature preserves. Plus, some like hiking, I prefer bashing a ball around...

US Sports history? That's unusual. Don't know anything about that. Don't have a Wii either. What about Skiing... with those knees?

Fair enough. Fortuately for me in rural France there aren't too many golf courses & there's plenty of space for hiking (or a gentle Sunday stroll, which is more likely). Husband claims that the best views for miles around are to be had from the only golf course for miles around. Let us know how you get on with Wii golf - should you ever have time to give it a go.
