Was it worth it? more >
Posted by: Lloyd

Latest Comment: The walk of life

Walk of life meaning that he is passing by the "49 years old" door, not stopping (thank God!) and moving on to the rest of his life, looking to the floor in a reflexive way. That's why the photos always show him walking, in a urban set which reflects his lyrics.

And what a great idea thet is. Those who thought that the artwork was just the style, clothes, colours, with no special hidden meaning neglected the fact that what Lloyd does (writes) has always two meanings.

The cover can be considered the first song of the record, a silent one (as John Cages's), an incipit metaphor.

LLOYD COLE Broken Record -Sonic Review

Swedish article-read in Swedish at link. Calling out for a better English translation. more >
Posted by: sigggy

Latest Comment: Kåre adds his Swedish Translation

Kåre Bjørklund
My English is unfortunately not good enough to make a “professional” translation, but this is the best I could to during my lunch break. Have your red pencil ready!
------
A decade after LC shut down his band The Negatives, he’s ready to roc...k again. The Massachusetts-based Brit celebrates this by releasing his Tenth studio album on a Geman label. When a 49 year-old man says things like “Why not make a rock(ing) record”, they should be met by all possible scepticism . But of course, when Lloyd says “rock” he doesn’ t mean the youth-longing and broad-legged kind, rather the careful interpretation made by a washed-out velvet suit. LC speaks from his heart to the soft tones of mandolins, steel guitars, drums, accordion and banjo. His musicians have Lou Reed, Antony And The Johnsons and Joan As Police Woman on their CVs. The previously manic name-dropping pop-theoretician is smart enough to criticise himself before anybody else does. »Not that I have much dignity left anyway«, is the first line in the opening song. He continues by nodding to the rock history, from Elvis Presley’s “That’s All Right" and The Beach Boys’ “Then I Kissed Her” to Rod Stewart’s “You Wear It Well”. As one of the of the leading apostles of rock journalist rock, he also writes a musical equivalent to Ulf Lundell’s novel “Vadermannen”. The theme? To do a “Plura”.
But these, almost parodic details cannot hide the fact that BR first and foremost is an humble, well-written and “drabbande” album.
------

“Plura” is probably Plura Jonsson of Swedish band Eldkvarn. I’m not sure what he actually did, but perhaps I understand when I hear the song.

Posted by: sigggy - 07/09/2010
