So we didn’t actually record anything yesterday but we figured out lots of things that didn’t work… that is progress. Today I was supposed to rest but I’m in the small room with Will’s Gretsch plugged into the Kemper amp via the Way Huge Ring Worm Ring Modulator. What a great pedal! And yes I did pay for it, after a small artist discount… (Way Huge is now owned by Jim Dunlop who have been supporting me since the early 90’s. Thanks, Jimmy.) I know Will was close yesterday so I start with the same 9th fret Capo set up. The guitar is in Nashville tuning – meaning it’s like the high strings on a 12 String – the notes get higher from the low E string, and then the top two string are lower again, which can make for great sounding chords and… confusion…
Most everything Will did yesterday was too busy, so I try to find something which can add without jumping out and saying “look – something new”. I play for a couple of hours, and I sense I’m getting somewhere but I’m frustrated with my technique and I am, frankly, too deep into the song to have any real faith in my own ideas, so I call Schwaber and luckily he’s free tonight… he can come at 7. And then, ironically, I guess, I record some pretty good stuff, and then i find another tiny arpeggio which can act more like a keyboard pad… William had mentioned, yesterday, that he thought we might use the Don’t Look Back arpeggio idea, and I didn’t really hear what he was getting at, but I see it today and it works (of course it isn’t exactly the same, but similar). By the time I pick up M Schwaber I’ve finished the song, including a keyboard pad which works wonderfully with the guitars, but I’m not sure…
I play Mark my part – what if we alternated lines, mine straighter, and Mark’s a little more… human? An hour later we have it. I drive home home and grab a beer at the bar and I’m home for 9.30…
