Q – Had never seen the video till today on Youtube. Always loved the song and the CD. What location was it shot at? And who is the co-star behind you?
A – I always thought it was an awful video. I wasn’t involved much. I’ll admit, today, that I really dropped the ball with the videos. I allowed a lot of decisions to be made by my management team, who were more interested in the genre. I was always somewhat resentful about the whole thing – there were no videos when I was growing up dreaming of being a pop star – so I wasn’t prepared for them in the way that I was for, say, TOTP or NME interviews…
Pretty much all the ideas I had for what I’d like to do with a video went into Perfect Skin and after that I wasn’t able to be of much help. They were so integral to the 80’s music business that I should have made time to study and figure out better ways to work within the medium. But that wasn’t easy when the vast majority of the videos out there were pure trash. Still, it was an opportunity wasted by me. My argument at the time was that I was so busy with the music that there wasn’t enough time or energy for me to address them, that, I think in retrospect, was BS. I was just annoyed at having this genre dumped on me and I reacted badly. I am not particularly fond of a single video we made after Perfect Skin, and I don’t think that one so great either. Sure, there were moments here and there – the Morning is Broken director was a smart guy, Jennifer she Said was fun – but overall I made a poor job of it.
