Q – I was wondering if you’ve ever had a go at “Me and Bobby McGhee”. I’ve seen on the site that you’ve recorded another KK song and so was thinking how a bit of LC magic (much in the style of “Everysong”) would give the song a refreshing spin. I’d say most of the great and the good who have covered it already (except Mr Cash) have mangled it. I-tunes is littered with truly awful interpretations.
I imagine you have a “wince’ometer” when fans suggest songs for you to do. Hopefully this won’t get too many bells ringing.
A – I have no wince’ometer. Not yet, anyway. The answer is quite simple really – I don’t like that song very much. For me it’s just OK. Can you imagine me singing anything with ‘Freedom’s just another word for..’ in it? I love KK’s love songs, sad songs, I don’t love all his songs by any means. And then there is Janis Joplin, one cannot discount her influence. If ever there was an artist I’d want nothing in common with…
