If Cole were any more selfdeprecating, he’d punch himself in the face, so it’s a relief to hear him throw his weight about in the company of the impeccable, country-minded band assembled here.

Yes, few can turn a line quite as cutely as Cole (“I look like a million bucks, sure I ain’t worth quite that much”), and the swinging, bluesy “Rhinestones” charms as effortlessly as anything on this album. But “Double Happiness” is a glimpse of a more expansive and frankly weirder artist. More of this older, bolder Cole, please.
