In a few weeks Lloyd Cole’s new album Broken record will be released on the German label Wallpaper Record (Swedish The distribution: Border). Below you can… see the video for Writers Retreat, which is the first single from the disc.

The British gentleman Lloyd Cole emerged in the mid-1980s with his band the commotions, but eventually left the band for a solo career. He later emigrated to the U.S.. He has mainly played solo the last few years, touring alone with his guitar creating his albums in a rather strict and orthodox way.

For the record label’s website, he tells how he “after almost a decade in self-chosen exile as an aspiring folk singer” began to yearn back for his old rock and roll life.
– Absolutely not the tour bus or managers – but the interaction with other musicians, camaraderie and joy to hear his music enhanced and developed with the help of other people’s aesthetics.

He writes that it was mainly two things that made him realize that he had to “return”.

– I had written several songs that were in a need for a “beat” and I had great fun with my new acoustic trio The Small Ensemble. Why not make a rock album – or whatever it becomes when the 49-year-olds trying to do this?

After chasing the money for recording, via the record label and fans, he mailed to the musicians in his dream band for the upcoming recording. He explained that the payment was poor and that there wasn´t any psooibility for negotiations. All said yes!

And what a dream band…

Lloyd Cole sings, and plays the guitar and banjo.

He describes the recording as “rewarding, perplexing, fabulously enjoyable and heinously stressful”.

– Now singing with a rock band in the studio, I felt just like 1987 or 1995, but when I saw my reflection in the window of the control room, I found myself wondering who that old guy was …

– I’m glad we finally completed the songs, because I’m not sure that I will ever record an album like this again. But, having said this, I’ll never go back to that room with the computer again…

The album will be released on 8 September and Lloyd Cole will be touring with The Small Ensemble throughout the fall.
