…It is still fascinating how Lloyd Cole’s lyrics – 26 years after his first album with The commotions – so often are designed for the literary novel system of rules. I.e. an initial phrase and introduction of one of the songs of the record, that forces one to read on and at the end of the song, has been reused with a newfound meaning to why it was first uttered. To emphasise this, one of the songs on Broken record is set in a “writer´s retreat”..The .musical backdrop or “frame” is his patented polite and well-read New England country & “lambs wool-Western”. Anyone who has ever been struck by Cole’s words will once again be surprised by how good he is ..
