Q – I noticed that Sentimental Fool starts with the line ‘The more I learn the less I know.’ Matt Johnson from ‘the The’ also wrote a song Slow Emotion Replay with a similar start ‘The more I see the less I know….’
I understand you both knew each other around the time both songs were written, and both shared a recording and rehearsal space at Harold Dessau. Did you work together on these songs in part?
A – Matt and I clearly did the sensible thing, being friendly – we didn’t listen each other. Not our music anyway. I had much more fun watching boxing with him or listening to his twisted humour. I had no idea of this. It’s not the most original concept, though. I think mine is only redeemed by the line following.
