Q – Hi Lloyd. As well as being a huge admirer of your work, I am also a follower of Matt Johnson (of ‘The The’ fame). I know that you and he have collaborated together (the beautiful song Memphis on Lloyd Cole’s Etc. and GlobalEyes on The The’s Naked Self).
Are you a fan of his music or was it more the fact that you met up in the studios in New York and hit it off as friends? I would love to hear your thoughts on him.
A – Matt and I became friends when we were neighbors in a studio complex in Lower Manhattan in the mid to late ’90s, but I was already a fan. We chose Paul Hardiman to produce Rattlesnakes because we all loved the sound of Soul Mining. Matt has a great sense of humour – maybe the darkest I’ve encountered, and I mean that as a compliment.
